When you enter a store or check out an online site, when you are considering purchasing technology, you may be overwhelmed with the number of brand names that await you. Because of the growth of the technology market, there is almost an equal number of generic (also known as off brand) technology items, that can be bought, as well. However, before you automatically assume that name brand technology is better, it is important to take the time to consider several different factors. While some people automatically assume that purchasing an off brand, will save them money, it is important to understand that this is not always the case. Here is what you need to know to answer the questions- Should you buy only name brand technology?

  • Realize that there are times that name brand is better-Sometimes there is no need to do additional research. Technology experts' stress that there are situations where picking a name brand technology item, is always the right idea. These situations include but are not limited to: you are using the item in making a living, this technology item will be used frequently or you are purchasing a computer. Name brand technology is especially important if you are using it to make your living. You want to know that you have purchased not only the highest quality of the item, but also that you have customer support and technical help, should you have a problem or question. Many times people rush into buying a generic item, because they are saving money, only to find out they are spending even more then they would on a name brand purchase, in repairs and support. This is especially true when it comes to computers.
  • Realize the name brand technology, most often has a lower fail rate-Most of the time (not always) name brand technology can take more wear and tear, because it is made with higher quality materials. In addition, not only should you consider the technology item itself, but little things like battery cases and longer cords that come with it. While these smaller items may not seem as important, it can be expensive to constantly be changing them. This rule especially applies to any technology item that you will be using frequently. Studies have shown that name brand technology generally holds up better over the long run, especially when it is being used frequently. Keep in mind that while the initial purchase may be more (because of the name brand), consumers often report that they save considerable money, in lower repair and replacement costs. Finally, it is extremely important to understand that name brands usually come with longer lasting and better warranties. Generic technology items may have much shorter warranties, if they come with one at all.
  • Realize that there are other costs as well-It is important to keep in mind that if your off brand technology item fails, you will not only have the costs of repairing or replacing it, but there could be other costs as well. Businesses who try to skimp by using generic brand computers, could find themselves with a disaster, if the computer crashes, along with all the business information. Worse yet, many off brand computers offer no technical support or customer service.
  • Realize that there are time that you don't need to buy name brand technology-Most of the time you don't need to put out the extra cash, for a name brand tool, gadget or appliance. This is especially true if this something you may only use occasionally either at the home or office. However, if you don't have to depend on it, either personally or professionally and the replacement cost is fairly small, you may be much better off selecting the off brand version of the higher costing technology item.
