Viruses, spyware and identity theft are some of the worst dangers you can face or come across when you use the internet. A computer virus is a malicious program that can invade and infest computer systems and perform different types of activities from annoying to critical. Viruses can be present as a simple annoying function like a pop up ad to a more serious and dangerous function like deleting files and destroying your hard disk.

Computer viruses are programs that must be triggered before they can infect your computer system and start spreading. Viruses can be spread by sharing infected files on a diskette or over the network drive. By exchanging infected files over the internet via email attachments or by downloading questionable files from the internet can help the virus to spread fast throughout the world.

As more and more people have access to the internet, viruses are also growing and spreading
from one computer to another everywhere on planet earth. The internet ability to provide immediate information is incomparable to any other method of file transmission. Unfortunately, many malicious individuals prowl the internet waiting to take advantage of some people who are naïve or careless. They are looking for information or to harm what's on your computer by deleting files or destroying your hard disk. This doesn't mean that you should avoid using the internet all together. You certainly need to be concerned while being online and protect yourself by paying extra close attention to questionable emails or files from the internet before opening them.

If you are simply using the internet to access the news or the weather for the day, you are probably not in danger of someone looking to steal your information or your internet access password or to tap into your personal financial information such as your bank account. However, if you are the type of person that constantly types personal information in email messages and probably in chat rooms, you can be certain that someone will try to access that information for personal use or to sell it to those who are interested. You should only open files and attachments from web sites or individuals you know and trust in order to avoid getting a virus.

Many web sites offer harmless games, stories and information that children like or can use for school projects or to connect with friends or other children worldwide. However, parents still need to take charge in helping to protect their children during their time online. The web is often unregulated and offers lots of sites that contain images or information that children shouldn't see or read. Make sure they have permission from you first before they start downloading anything from the web, give away personal information or open an email from someone they don't know. This can help avoid predators that want to get to your children as well as viruses to infest your computer and destroy all your files.

To protect yourself from computer viruses, you can buy anti-virus software available online or at your local store. Anti-virus software is a wonderful tool that protects email, instant messages and other files on your computer by removing threats and viruses. It can also stop infected files due to a virus from spreading and damaging your computer. It also has a way to repair infected files so you can continue using your computer without the fear of spreading the virus to other computers, deleting your files or destroying your hard disk.

You are never totally free of new viruses being created every day and spreading it through your internet. You need to continually update your anti-virus software to protect you from new viruses. The anti-virus software can detect any suspicious software and prevent it from running. It will also scan all of the files on your computer from time to time to give that extra peace of mind. In addition to anti-virus programs, you also need to consider installing a firewall. The firewall can block traffic and access to certain web unless otherwise authorized. You also may think about placing your home computer behind a router. This will only improve the security of your home computer. Protect your email from spam using a filter.
