4 tips for great digital photography

Are you the kind of photographer who just turns on your digital camera, points, shoots, and hopes/trusts that the camera will make everything turn out ok?Don't be ashamed or embarrassed if this is how you photograph your family gatherings, your vacations, or anything else.Digital cameras are pretty good at making sure that you get a good picture. But the digital camera's power isn't quite enough. But there are a number of tips and things that you can do as the photographer to turn your digital photographs from pretty good to fantastic!

  1. Turn your pictures from cool to . . . warm.- Most of the time, people take their digital photos with all of the settings on auto. The auto setting for the camera's white balance tends to be more on the cool side than the warm side, which will make the tones in your photos seem cooler. This cooler tone will be fine for a number of pictures. However, if you are taking pictures of people outside or if you are taking landscape pictures with a lot of sunshine, then you need to change the white balance setting.Change it to cloudy from auto. This will give all of the pictures a warmer feel to them, because the cloudy setting makes all of the yellows and the reds more emphasized.
  2. Use a polarizer-or just use your sunglasses.- A polarizing filter is one of the best tools that any photographer can have.A polarizing filter will cut down on any glare or reflections in your photos. This means that all of your photos-particularly photos of the sky-will be richer and have much better colors. However, your digital camera probably doesn't let you use filters.Does this mean that you are destined for a lifetime of landscape pictures with that unwelcome glare and slightly cold look? You don't need a polarizing filter, though, to get the same great effect. And you can get it for a lot less money than purchasing a filter.Just take off your sunglasses and hold them as close to the lens of your camera as you can.Make sure that you don't get any of the sunglasses rims in the shot, and then just point and shoot. To get the best effect from your polarizing sunglasses, make sure that the sun is over either of your shoulders. The light source should be at a 90 degree angle from the subject.
  3. Take control of your flash.- Do you take lots of outdoor portraits but you get frustrated because you control the amount of flash or when the flash goes off?Well, there's actually a feature on your digital camera that will let you completely control the flash so that you decide whether or not the flash goes off and when it will go off. It's called either the fill flash mode or the flash on mode. What this option does is that the background will be the first thing illuminated by the camera. Then, after illuminating the background, the camera will provide just the right amount of flash for the subjects.
The result is a great, professional-looking photo that has every element in the photograph looking good. Also make sure that the model either is in the shade, or so that the sun is illuminating the model either from the back or the side.
  4. Have fun with water- Have you ever seen a beautiful waterfall or river that you want to catch in motion?Do your pictures always end up being more disappointing than stunning? What you need to do is take a slow motion picture of the water.
    1. Mount your camera on a tripod.

    2. Slow down the shutter to an exposure of at least 1 second.

    3. Set the self timer.

    4. If your camera happens to have an aperture priority setting that you can change, set the aperture to either f-16, f-11, or f-8.
