Ways teachers could use podcasting in school

The great thing about podcasting is that it can be used by anybody and can be used in any subject. Teachers who are taking advantage of podcasting in the classroom have tapped into a great educational tool and can adapt it to fit their needs in the classroom. Podcasts can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom; all that really limits the students and the teachers is their imagination.

Here are some ways that teachers can use podcasting in schools.

  • Field trips - after the children have gone on a field trip have them make a recording about what they enjoyed about the field trip and what they have learned. Then have them create a podcast to share with others. This can be done individually or in groups.
  • Reports - rather than having students do the traditional oral reports, poster board and speaking, have them create a podcast on their subject. In having them do the reports include all of the research steps and written drafts, but just make the final part of the report the actual podcast.
  • Radio shows - this can be an ongoing project for older kids in a music class or a journalism class. Have them put together a weekly radio show, have them include music that they have played or sang. Teach them how to record their own music and then edit it so they can create a podcast.
  • Discussions - this is a great podcasting idea in education because the children can have group discussion on any type of topic that catches there interest. This can actually work really well for a substitute on current events. Have the children pick out a current event that they want to discuss and have a classroom discussion on it while creating a podcast. Children can also discuss what books they enjoy and why. The possibilities for discussions are endless.
  • Interviews - this is a great idea for journalism classes where students can do interviews with other students or special guest speakers on subjects that they feel need to be discussed, such as bullying and how to stop it, what to do if your friend brings a gun to school, etc.
  • Vocabulary - this helps both younger and older students. By having vocabulary words on a podcast the children can use a portable media device or their personal computer to download the podcast and learn their vocabulary words by listening to them. You can also include practice spelling tests on podcasts or other creative ways for children to practice spelling and vocabulary.
  • Learning a foreign language - whether you are teaching French, Spanish or English children can benefit from having the lesson plans done with podcasts because it will help to reinforce the pronunciation of the words and help them with the vocabulary or grammar rules for the language.
  • Storytelling - this would probably apply to the younger children but you can record numerous stories that children can listen to and follow along with in a book during activity time, where they are choosing different stations to participate in.
  • Lectures - this would actually apply to the older students more than the younger students but by recording your lectures if a student misses the class they can still get the benefit of the lecture. Also this can come in handy for note taking, some students are able to take notes while listening, but others just can't seem to grasp the concept or can't do it as well. By providing your lecture on podcasts the students can take their time in taking notes so that they make sure they understand the subject. They can also skip the sections they already have mastered and focus on the ones that are giving them trouble. They can also be a great tool when it comes time to study for mid-terms or finals.
