What role should your company fill in the virtual world?

wiredworld19083276.jpg The virtual world is quickly becoming a large part of many businesses. The virtual world is a 3-D internet-based simulated world that allows for social networking. Many people design their virtual world after the real world with people, houses, buildings, roads, bars, amusement parks, etc.

The virtual world can help your company market themselves. You can engage in advertising and v-commerce (buying and selling goods) and even build meeting rooms to chat with not only your employees, but your customers as well. Many computer games such as the "Sims" series allow companies to pay for billboards or other promotions in their virtual world.

Deciding how your company will fit into the virtual world is a different procedure. Many companies simply do not know where to begin or think that the virtual world is only for video games. This is indeed not true since video games rely on sponsorships to help offset some of the costs or making the game in the first place. Here are a few tips that can help you decide how your company can fit in the virtual world:

Make your presence known
The first thing you need to do is establish your image in the virtual world. Think of the virtual world as you did with the internet, it is a new way for your company to grow and expand. How did you start incorporating the internet into your workplace? You can start out with advertising in the virtual world or you can simply begin with v-commerce. Other new companies to the virtual world have even used it to put out more information about their company and the products or services they provide. Get a team of people together and start brainstorming strategies.

Promoting your products
As you are probably aware, finding an eCommerce solution is not always easy. Many software programs for shopping carts require a lot of maintenance and sometimes do not flow as smoothly as you would like. V-commerce originally began as an internet telephone communication and now has expanded to promoting your products and services. In fact, there is a company named "Vcommerce Solutions". They specialize in creating eCommerce sites for their clients and are quite good at it too.

Some companies have used V-commerce to promote entirely new products and services, while others have stuck to the same products and services that work for them. No matter what route you decide, your goals should include some of the following:

  • Increase revenue

  • Reduce costs

  • Deliver fast, smooth online customer experiences

  • Reduce risk of theft

The leader of the pack
Just like any new department in the company, your virtual world needs someone to mange it. Many companies have not created a new department, but have simply added on virtual world roles to certain individuals in the company. Marketing and sales departments are a great place to start as they specialize in promoting your company.

What is the purpose?
Some companies do not know what their role will be in the virtual world. Start by thinking about what needs your customers have and how you can fill those needs for them. If you need, you can create multiple virtual worlds and see which ones are successful.

Development
Just like anything else, the virtual world will cost time and money to create. The major costs will be for the design, building, maintenance, hosting, and integration of your virtual world.

Right now many companies struggle with recouping their investment because the virtual world is so new. Advertising, sales, marketing, customer research, training, and market research will all benefit from the virtual world. Set up a tracking chart to see how your company is making or losing money on your new investment. Many companies have found that the mode of entry is critical to making your virtual world work.
