When it comes to digital cameras you can buy numerous accessories for your camera depending on what it is you want to do. You can buy different batteries; you can buy numerous memory cards, travel bags, tripods, and many different types of optional lenses. Like traditional cameras digital cameras come with a regular lenses that can zoom in or out and focus on objects, but what they don't come with are the specialty lenses that allow you to do more with your picture taking than the regular lens, these lenses are known as conversion lenses.

The original lens that comes with your digital camera has a focal length of 35mm and all other focal lengths of lengths are described in terms of 35mm equivalent.

Here are some of the optional conversion lenses that you can buy for your digital camera.

Fixed Focal length:
This type of lenses does not change at all; all you can do is to adjust the focus. If you want to take a close up of somebody you are going to have to move closer to the object, but when doing that you have to be careful because the features of the object can become distorted.

Optical zoom lens:
This type of lens is a true zoom lens which means that its focal length actually changes and the zoom mechanism itself extends and retracts so that a certain image can be magnified by the lens itself. This type of zoom lens produces the best quality images.

Digital zoom lens:
This type of lenses is not a true zoom lens because its zoom mechanism does not extend and retract. Instead it has a stimulated zooms that enlarges the central portion of an image in the camera. Because the actual length of the lens does not change it can not magnify the image by the lens itself. This type of lens produces images with reduced visual quality.

Wide-angle lens:
This type of lens has a larger field of view than any other type of lenses, which makes it capable of capturing more of the scene in front of the camera by getting more of the scene that is on the sides of the image. With digital photography the wide-angle lens is different than it is in traditional photography. With digital photography the smaller sensors will turn the moderate wide-angle lenses to a standard lens, while the extreme wide-angle lenses will turn to a normal lens. If you want a wide effect in digital photography you are going to need to use something like a 12mm lenses to get that effect. But remember wide-angle lenses, whether it is traditional or digital photograph is not meant to get everything into the picture (that can cause distortion) but a wide-angle lens is designed to allow you to get closer to the object you are photographing.

Another thing that you need to be aware of when buying lens for your digital camera is that compact digital cameras won't accept interchangeable lenses like Single Lens Reflex cameras will. But many compact digital cameras will accept add-on converter lenses.

Converter lenses:
These types of lenses are for compact digital cameras and are actually pretty inexpensive, but they can extend the flexibility and capability of a built-in lens. One thing that you need to look into before buying a converter lens is that some converter lenses for digital cameras will require an adapter so that the lens will mount onto the front of the camera correctly. A disadvantage to converter lenses is that they can be bigger and bulkier than the digital camera that they are attaching to, which can make the set up annoying.
