What you need to know about the battery life of your digital camera

One thing that you need to know about digital cameras is that they use batteries for their power source. And regardless of what type of battery you use it is only good for a limited amount of time before you need to replace it with new batteries. While special battery packs are more expensive in the beginning, you will probably end up spending more than that on disposable batteries.

When it comes to digital cameras you will find out that many of the greatest features on the digital cameras are high energy consumers, which drains the life from your batteries faster than anything else. Two of the biggest energy consumers are the LCD screen and the mechanical components of the camera, such as the lenses when zooming or focusing. The motors and the flash are also big energy consumers for your digital cameras batteries. Basically the entire process of taking a picture is what is going to consume your cameras batteries, so it seems like you are always going to be changing batteries no matter what you do. But the good news is that there are ways to help save or extend the life of your batteries.

Here are a few tips for saving or extending the life of your digital cameras batteries.

Tip one:
Turn off the LCD screen and use the viewfinder. Using the LCD screen to preview photos, compose photos or to take a picture is wasting a lot of your battery life. You can turn it off by going to your cameras menu option and selecting disable LCD. You should only use the LCD when you have to, such as taking an overhead photo.

Tip two:
Another way to increase your battery life is to minimize your photo previewing. Since you must use the LCD screen to preview your photos you are wasting the battery every time you look at a photo. Instead only preview the photos when you need to, such as to make sure the composition was right for the next photo or if the lighting was good. If you want to show off your photos or preview the photos wait until you get home and download them to your computer.

Tip three:
Do not press the shutter button half way down if you are not taking a photo. Each time you do that the camera goes through the entire process of getting ready to take a picture and wastes the life of your battery because it is waking up the camera to get ready for a picture.

Tip four:
Because continuous focus uses more energy than single focus you should only use continuous focus when it is necessary. For example you are taking a picture of something that is in motion, this requires constant focus because the object you are taking a picture of is going in and out of focus and to capture it your camera needs to continuously focus on that object otherwise the photo would be blurry. But you also don't want to hold your finger on the shutter button for too long a period because that also wastes energy, what you should do is put your finger on the shutter button and press it when the object is close to where you want it.

Now that you know about how a digital camera can drain your batteries and what you can do to help extend the battery life you should also know a few other things. Something that you should keep in mind is to always carry back up batteries; this will ensure that you don't run out of batteries at the perfect photo opportunity. If you use rechargeable batteries you should charge the batteries whenever you can that way when you leave the house you have two fully charged battery packs for your camera. And lastly you should always plan ahead for battery consumption that way you are never caught unaware.
