Which is better li-ion batteries, or AA

When it comes to digital camera batteries there are a variety of different types of batteries that you can choose from. But two of the most popular types of batteries are regular AA batteries and li-ion batteries. The AA batteries are considered disposable batteries because you have to throw them away once they have died. Li-ion batteries are considered rechargeable batteries because you can use them over and over again. In reality neither battery is better than the other but people do have certain preferences when it comes to batteries.

Here are some advantages of li-ion batteries.

  • Can be formed into a wide variety of shapes and sizes so that they can efficiently fill available space in the devices that they power, which means the people who make the devices don't have to worry about where the battery compartment is going to go.
  • Li-ion batteries are lighter than regular batteries because lithium is the third lightest element.
  • Li-ion batteries do not suffer from memory effect, which is what causes rechargeable batteries to hold less charge. This used to happen when batteries where not completely drained before being recharged.
  • Li-ion batteries also have a low self-discharge rate of about 5% per month compared to other rechargeable batteries that can lose between 10 to 30 percent per month.
  • They are rechargeable which means you will be able to reuse the same batteries over and over.

Here are some disadvantages of li-ion batteries.

  • The life of the battery is dependent upon aging from the time of manufacturing, which means that as soon as the battery was made it starts to age regardless of if it was charged or not. The life of the battery is not dependent on how many times it has been charged. So when buying these batteries you should take a look at the manufacturing date because if it is old it will not last as long as the newer batteries.

  • When the battery is 100% charged and stored around 25 degrees Celsius will irreversibly lose about 20% capacity per year, which is how the battery ages and will tell you about how long the battery will last before it needs to be replaced. But most situations the battery is used in higher temperatures the battery life is shortened.

  • Li-ion batteries can go into a deep discharge state which means it takes them a very long time to recharge.

  • Rather than showing a low battery warning in certain equipment these batteries might just suddenly fail.

  • Li-ion batteries can not be discharged below a certain point or they will have irreparable damage, all li-ion batteries have a circuit that shuts down the system when the battery is discharged below that point.

  • Li-ion batteries are not as durable and are usually more expensive

  • Subject of frequent recalls because they are not as safe as other batteries. In fact numerous safety features are added to the battery before it can be used outside of the laboratory.

Here are some advantages of the AA battery.

  • Nominal output voltage is 1.5 volts compared to 1.2 volts with rechargeable batteries.

  • Costs around eight dollars for a four pack of AA batteries compared to the Li-ion batteries which are more expensive.

  • Can buy a variety of different styles of batteries that promise longer shelf life

  • AA lithium batteries have a long shelf life

  • Negligible self-discharge rate

  • Excellent low-temperature performance

  • Are capable of providing high current needed for fast recycling of the camera flash

When it comes to regular AA batteries there are not very many disadvantages to using those batteries except for that fact that they are disposable and the cost can add up. What really matters when choosing a battery for your digital camera is how often you are going to be using your digital camera. If you are only going to be using it sporadically throughout the year you should stick with the lower cost AA batteries, but if you are going to be using it daily then you will want to invest in some better batteries.
