Want to find out what your employees think about you? A great way to find out is to ask them! Using employee surveys you will be able to find out what type of manager they think you are and they can also provide you with tips on where they feel you could improve as a manager. Getting tips on how to become a better manager from your employees can easily make you into a better manager and will help your employees to respect you more. Collecting data is one way to help you out, here are some other tips that can help you in becoming a better manager.

Listen
One of the top qualities of a good manager is finding a person that understands how to listen to others. You need to be able to listen to your employees to show them that you care about what they have to say. As you listen to them, focus on shutting off all other distractions and things that can take your attention away from your employees. You want to give them eye contact, which helps to show them just how important they are. Make a note of the things that you talked about with the employee so you can follow up with them in the future.

Never Play Favorites
A good manager treats everyone with respect and treats them the same. You should never play favorites with your staff as this clearly sends the wrong message. It will cause your other employees to become frustrated with the company but it can also reduce employee morale as well. Show everyone that you appreciate them and make sure they know how important they are to the company in an equal way. One way to show your staff that you care about all of them is by focusing on being consistent with the way you manage them and treat them.

Communicate Effectively
Want to give your employees a chance to become successful? You need to work on your communication skills. It is important that you learn how to communicate in a proper manner to help them understand what their job duties are and what is expected of them. When you are clear with your communication, it also helps your employees to feel better about doing their jobs and it can prevent a lot of confusion and frustration. Use emails to follow up with projects and deadlines. Swing by their desk and just clear up any confusion between the two of you. This is a great way to make sure you are both on the same page and that the company will be able to move forward correctly.

Meetings
You should have individual meetings with your staff members and talk to them about their role within the company. It is a good idea to compliment them for their hard work and to show them how much you appreciate them. Then give them helpful ideas and other things on how they can become even better and to help them progressing with the company. Set goals with them to help them understand what their roles are in the company and to help them work harder as this can help them to feel better about their job. Give yourself plenty of time to meet with the employees so they feel that they do have your complete attention and also to show them that you are focused on helping them improve. You don't want to rush them out of a performance evaluation meeting as it can have repercussions that you perhaps aren't prepared for and it could cause other employees to become frustrated with the company as well.
