How to treat dark eye circles

elegant30389198.jpgMost people at one time or another in their lives will experience dark eyes circles. For some people this condition can be ongoing, or it can appear overnight, depending upon the cause. While most of the time dark eye circles are just a cosmetic concern, it can be helpful to understand what causes them.Much of the treatment for dark circles under your eyes lies in the prevention of them. In addition, discovering natural methods to treat and prevent them, not only will give you a healthier appearance, but can eliminate health issues at the root of the problem.

Dark circles can happen under the eyes because the skin under the eyes is very thin, and somewhat transparent. When this skin becomes inflamed, your eyes appear to have dark circles under them. There are several conditions that can cause this to happen. These conditions include but are not limited to:

  • Sinus infections

  • Allergies

  • Colds-which promote itchy eyes and can, lead to dark circles due to inflammation from rubbing and scratching the skin.

  • Hay fever-sufferers often develop prominent dark eyes circles at the height of allergy season.

  • Food allergies

  • Certain medications can also aggravate this condition if they cause blood vessels to dilate, because of the increase in size and blood flow, through the veins underneath the skin.

  • Pregnancy

  • Lack of sleep

  • Menstruation can cause the skin to become paler, which may increase the appearance of dark circles.

  • Nutrient deficiency, (especially iron), or an unbalanced diet can be a cause of the darkened appearance under the eyes.

  • Aging can cause these circles to become more prominent, because as we get older, the collagen in the skin decreases, resulting in thinner, and more transparent skin.

Protecting the skin around the eyes becomes crucial in helping to prevent dark eye circles. This is especially true when you are protecting the skin from the rays of the sun.
It is crucial to always wear healthy sunscreen protection, when you are going to be exposed to the sun, to avoid skin damage and skin weakening. Vitamin K has been shown to be useful in healing bruising, and it is believed that when applied topically as a cream it helps diminish dark circles. Vitamin C also strengthens bloods vessel walls, thus making them less vulnerable to inflammation.

There are several foods that have been shown to have antioxidants that can help strengthen blood vessels. Incorporating these foods into your diet can help prevent dark eye circles. These foods are:

  • Onions

  • Blueberries

  • Cranberries

  • Black currants

  • Parsley

  • Legumes

  • Green and black tea

In addition, anyone suffering from dark eye circles on an ongoing basis should review their overall diet. Experts recommend avoiding foods that are highly processed, contain large amounts of caffeine, hydrogenated oils, sugar, and alcohol. Adding more fruits and vegetables, (especially carrots, leafy greens, and cucumbers) can be beneficial because they contain essential cleansing nutrients like Vitamin A for healthy eyes, B complex for deeper, more satisfying sleep and Vitamin C for stronger blood vessels. It is also critical to remember the importance of getting a good night's sleep, each and every night for the prevention of dark eye circles.

If you do continue to have dark eye circles, you can try one of these natural remedies. These include:

  • Cool cucumbers will tighten pores, moisturize skin, and reduce puffiness. They should be put on closed eyes for about 15 minutes.

  • Herbs have also been effective in treating dark circles. Eyebright is known to strengthen the connective tissue around the eye and Golden seal has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.Witch hazel also reduces bruising and inflammation under the eyes when it is applied topically.
