Understanding the risk factors of depression

closeup26670239.jpgWith so many people, being diagnosed with depression, I want to know if I am at risk. What are the risk factors for depression and can I avoid it?

It can be scary to feel that you are at risk for any disease, and depression is not different. However, by understanding the risk factors for depression, you can take some proactive steps to limit the possibility that it will happen to you. You should keep in mind that depression is a complicated issue that affects every individual differently. Contrary to previous beliefs depression is not just the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, and is not simply cured with medication. Experts today believe that depression is caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. In other words, your lifestyle choices, relationships, and coping skills matter just as much (if not more so) than genetics. However, there are still certain risk factors that can make you more vulnerable to depression. Here are some of them-

  • Loneliness

  • Lack of social support

  • Recent stressful life experiences

  • Family history of depression

  • Marital or relationship problems

  • Financial strain

  • Early childhood trauma or abuse

  • Alcohol or drug abuse

  • Unemployment or underemployment

  • Health problems or chronic pain

It should be understood that the cause of your depression helps determine the treatment
This is important because understanding the underlying cause of your depression, may help you overcome the problem.

It should also be noted that just as the symptoms, and causes of depression are different in different people, so are the ways to feel better. Everyone needs to understand that what works for one person, might not work for another, and no one treatment is appropriate in all cases. If you recognize the signs of depression in yourself or a loved one, you should take some time to explore the many treatment options. Experts and patients alike, agree that the best approach involves a combination of self-help strategies, lifestyle changes, and professional help.

It is important to understand that even if you have risk factors in your life, that does not necessarily mean you will become depressed. Conversely, depression can occur without any of these risk factors being present (though that is much rarer). If you find that you have become depressed and if even the thought of tackling your depression seems overwhelming, don't panic. Try to understand that feeling helpless, and hopeless, is a symptom of depression and not the reality of your situation. The key to depression recovery is to start small, and ask for help. In addition, having a strong support system in place will speed your recovery. Remember that isolation fuels depression, so reach out to others, even when you feel like being alone. You need to let your family, and friends, know what you are going through, and how they can support you.

Another way to lesson risk factors for depression is to make lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes are not always easy to make, but they can have a big impact on depression. You should take a good look at your own lifestyle, and determine what could be put into place to help you lesson your risk for depression. Self-help strategies that can be very effective include:

  • Cultivating supportive relationships

  • Getting regular exercise and sleep

  • Eating a healthy, mood-boosting diet

  • Managing stress

  • Practicing relaxation techniques

  • Challenging negative thought patterns

If you find that despite your best efforts to lesson your risk, you do become depressed it is important to ask for help. Sometimes positive lifestyle changes, and support from family and friends aren't enough. Then is the time to seek help from a mental health professional. Remember that there are many effective treatments for depression, including therapy, medication, and alternative treatments.
