There is a moment where each of us has picked up a video camera with the intention of creating a video that was really great.Unfortunately instead of great movies we have home videos and there is an obvious difference. You know that you aren't really looking to become the next famous cinematographer; you just want your digital videos to look more professional than they do now.Fortunately there are some easy tips that you can follow to bring your digital videos up a level.

Use a tripod

One of the biggest flaws of amateur digital video recording is an unsteady hand. You can always tell the difference between professional video and home movies because when watching home movies you just may get motion sickness. There is a simple answer for this problem and it will make a huge difference, just use a tripod.Tripods are easy to use and can best stabilize a scene. Also keep in mind that the further you zoom in the more difficult it will be to keep your hand steady. So, a tripod is especially helpful for the close up shots.

Eye level

When you are recording people, try to get them at eye level. This means that you should bend or sit down in order to get the shot of young children.Additionally, having every shot from the exact same angle and height becomes very boring and lacking in perspective. Also keep in mind that the background may be an important part of your video and if your angle never changes you may miss out on the views from all the other angles.

Lights, camera, action!

Did you ever wonder why in this very popular phrase that the lights were mentioned first? It is because lighting can make or break a shot.Lighting can make a subject look flat and boring or dynamic and energetic.Certain angles facing to and away from the sun will give you different looks. Also, be aware that strong backlight can completely shadow your subject.Take the time to shut curtains, turn on lamps, and ask people to turn so that you get them in their best light.

The beauty of editing

One of the biggest advantages to having a digital video camcorder is that you can edit as much of your film as you want on your home computer. If your plan is to edit make sure that when you film your scenes there is enough material there to work with. You can always film more when you are in the moment but you cannot always re-create a situation because you do not have enough useable material to work with at the editing table.

Protect your wallet

Camera accessories can become quite costly if you are not careful. It is certainly exciting to go to the electronics store and stock up in fancy gear but all that will definitely put a dent in your pocket book.Instead, think of more cost effective alternatives that will give you the same visual effect. The hardware store is actually a good place to find cheap materials.Shop lights, PVC pipe, and wood clamps will do the same as pro-caliber lighting units, light stands, backdrop supports, and utility clamps, for about half the price.

Follow other's example

The cheapest way to teach yourself how to create professional looking digital videos is to observe how the professionals shoot a scene.Take a trip to the movies or watch your favorite show on TV.Observe how they move the camera to capture a scene.Notice all of the strong lighting, clear audio, and simple cuts between scenes.
