As a small business owner, you need to be able to find different ways to focus on employee motivation. How can you keep the valuable employees that you have and find different ways to maintain their happiness? It is not the easiest thing to do but it can be done with the right type of hard work and to know what your employees want. How can you focus on employee motivation to aid in boosting productivity? Here are some effective tips:

1. Smile! How does this help in motivating your staff? When you smile, it instantly helps to change your mood and the other person's mood. People are less likely to start off the day on the wrong foot when they have a smile on their face. You can set the right mood for everyone by walking into the office with a simple smile and walking around to your staff members to ask them how their day is going or how their weekend was. Show interest in them, it really helps them to feel that you are interested and that you do care about them.
2. Talk to them. Want a simple way to motivate your staff? Talk to them! You would be surprised to see how easy it is to make your employees motivated just by taking a few minutes to sit down and chat with them. Set some goals with your employees. Find out what type of interests they have. Really work on communicating with them and let them feel that their opinion is heard and that it matters. Ask the employees for their opinions and get their feedback. When they feel like you are listening, it makes them feel needed and this can really go a long way with employee motivation.
3. Reward them. People love it when they are given free stuff! You should plan on giving them free things like gift cards and other things when they do a good job. If you notice they are looking stressed, reduce their workload or make it a little more manageable for them. You want to make sure you do give them the proper compensation for their job and that you are working hard on being able to give the employees something to work toward.
4. Positive criticism. When it comes to motivating your employees, it always helps to start out criticism with some type of compliment. People need to know what they are doing well and that you do recognize their hard work and effort. When you start out with positive criticism, it does make it easier to take the suggestions you are offering to them. If you are always negative, it decreases the overall employee morale and doesn't create a working environment that people really want to work for.
5. Give them room! People have a hard time working when they feel like their boss is always breathing down their neck. You need to provide your employees with room to breathe! It helps them to feel that you trust them and people are less likely to feel overwhelmed or stressed when you trust them and you aren't hovering over them to check up on their work performance.
6. Set goals. A great way to motivate people is through effective goal setting. It is easier for your employees to know the expectations set on them when you set goals for them. This way everyone will know what the performance standards are and what they can do in order to meet these standards. You have an easier time adjusting the goals based on the employees individual performances and to know what you need to do in order to find different ways to motivate your staff members.
