The internet is one of the best things to come along in quite some time. If you are like most of us you know how useful this thing is, how absolutely important it is to business and to many people's personal lives. We shop online, send emails, and write blogs. Many of us like to spend our free time just surfing around the web in order to find some sort of ammusing video or piece of interesting information. Many of us like to get rid of extra time at work while surfing the web. We spend hours a day looking at web pages. There is nothing wrong with this as long as it doesn't affect our lives in a negative way.

So while it can be interesting and fun to find lots of interesting websites, many of us would not like other people to know which sites we look at. Just as you might not want others to know what TV shows you watch, what food you eat, what radio stations you listen to, and who you call on the phone, you might also not want them know which email sites you look at. Naturally you can only figure out which sites people look at by going to their computer and looking at something called a browser history. A browser historykeeps track of all the different sites you have visited while surfing the net. It keeps track of the actual site address for each one. So how will you get rid of this trail of information left everytime you look at a website on the internet? And how will you do so if you use google, one of the most popular internet search engines?

The answer depends partly on which web browser you use. You should also know that Google does not actually record your search history, so you need to disable it in your individual browser. If you use internet explorer you will need to follow these steps. First, find the `tools' menu, then go to `internet options,' and then to the `content' tab. When you get to the spot that says `personal information' select `auto complete.' If you want to erase the history up to this point, choose `clear forms' under current history. If you want to permanently disable this particular feature, uncheck the `forms' box.

One other way to get rid of particular sites on your search history is to select them in the browser history and delete them using the delete key.

If you use Firefox ans your browser, as many of us do, there are a few other steps you will need to take. First, go to the `tools' menu. Then choose `options,' then `privacy,' and then make changes inside the `saved form information' space. If you want to erase the history up to that point choose `clear' under current history. If you want to get rid of this option for good uncheck the `save information I enter in web page forms and the search bar.' If you want to clean up the browser history quickly, put the cursor in the search box. Then right click and choose `clear search history.' This is a fast way to clean up that browser history. As with Internet Explorer you can go through individual browser history items and delete them using the delete key.
Using these steps you can either erase or disable the browser history of your computer. You will be able to better control what people see when they come to your computer.
