Updating systems to be compatible with new technology

One of the biggest challenges facing business owners is the constant need to update their system in order to be compatible with any new technology. When bringing new technology into a system it is often not enough to simply install it and walk away often systems must be updated with new memory or have their computer drivers updated. While this may seem overwhelming it is really a simple process when you understand the components that are involved. Here is some basic information to help you begin updating systems to be compatible with new technology.

1. First you may need to ask yourself: exactly what is a driver? The simplest explanation is that a driver is a computer program that controls another device. Everything in your computer from your keyboard to your video card has a corresponding driver. The driver works by acting like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. If there were no drivers in your computer nothing would work. Drivers are extremely important little programs and will need to be maintained or updated on a regular basis and when any other new technology (hardware or software) is added to the system. Failure to update your drivers can cause your devices and the software that uses them to behave strangely, work poorly, or simply stop working all together.

2. Why do drivers need to be updated? From maintenance standpoint drivers often need to be updated to correct for bugs that were part of an initial release. This is so common that often before the initial product hits the shelves, updates are available online to fix bugs that are in the software. This hold true for almost every part of a computer a lot of driver updates simply fix issues that have been discovered since the product's initial release. But this is not the only reason that drivers must be updated. It would be virtually impossible for any manufacturer to release a product that would be totally compatible with every product already out there. Companies fix this problem by releasing updated drivers, which make their old products compatible with new ones.
3. Once you have determined that your computer will need to have their driver updated in order to accept and work with new technology than you must find out exactly what type of drivers you have. If you purchased your system from a large computer manufacturer this process should be relatively simple. Most large computer manufacturers have a section on their web site that will allow you to enter in your computer's model or serial number. The site will then tell you exactly what hardware is installed on your computer and provide you with a list of updates to the corresponding drivers' most recent update. Many websites will even provide a way to let you register an e-mail address so it can tell you when any of those files are updated.
4. If the new technology you are adding to your system is hardware (upgraded video or sound card, installed a modem, etc.) then you must consult the product's manufacturers website to check for needed compatible specifications. It is a good idea to write down the make, model number, and serial number of each product you install on your computer. Keep and file any documentation that came with the product. The alternative is forgetting what you installed and not having the information you need which may lead to having to crack open your computer case and pull the part out to find out that information.
5. After installing and updating new drivers to insure compatibility with new technology do not overlook the final step of checking memory. If your computer system becomes overburdened with running new programs it will simply stall and crash.Be sure and check all needed memory capacity before installing any new technology thus insuring better compatibility between your existing system and anything new.
