The world of technology can be a complicated place. There are many different types of business technology and many different terms that apply. It is important that any business owner who is using technology become familiar with these terms and how they can apply to the technology that you will use in your business. - Spyware-This type of technology is much like the name sounds. These are scripts that are designed to specifically spy on the computer user. They will collect highly private information such as: logins, passwords, credit card data, address books, and even search queries.
- Viruses-This type of technology comes in a program code or script. The biggest problem with viruses is that most are capable of self replication. This means that they can transfer easily from one computer to another. If a business does not have adequate firewall protection they can easily take down an entire network.
- Malware-This type of computer program is designed to take down a computer, a server, or an entire network. They generally have a very specific purpose in mind. Malware programs usually appear very deep in files and can even crop up again after they have seemed to be removed.
- Trojans-Like malware this type of technology is designed to destroy computers by altering information on a hard disk or even destroying it. However, Trojans are worse since like the name implies they come into your computer as important or useful updates to programs that you already have.
- Adware-This type of technology problem comes in the form of a program that does not have consent to display ads on your computer. These can be pop-ups or even sites that are automatically downloaded.
- Malicious toolbars-These are most often programs that are downloaded with the seeming functionality of a regular toolbar. However, they are installed in order for hackers to be able to analyze information that is stored in the memory of a computer or even a smart phone.
- Cookie-It is important to understand that this is type of legitimate file. However, these files store information about where you go on the internet. They are designed to make internet surfing easier and faster but if someone with bad intent gets a hold of them they can seriously damage your business with this information.
- Theft browser-This type of script will change the start page of the web browser without consent from the user. While this may not seem damaging it can open the computer system to other problems listed here.
- Worms-This is another self replicating virus that can change as it moves through your computer. Because of the design it can be very difficult to remove them from your computer system.
Business technology experts stress that while there are programs and firewalls that can protect against these problems the main defense are using your common sense. You should never open email from strangers, or download apps or programs that you are not sure about the origin. If you let your common sense make decisions for you and you don't act impulsively this will go a long way toward protecting your business and its technology.
