- Get your employees involved-If you want to manage for better performance you will need to get your employees involved. Savvy business managers will sit their employees down and discuss what they need to work on and the results that they want to see. If you are a business manager who wants better performance you will need to talk to your team about it with an open line of communication and take their input, as well.
- Design clear goals and a way to measure them-In order to measure performance you will need to have clear goals and way to measure progress toward those goals. Your employees will perform better when they know what they are trying to accomplish, how to accomplish it, and how much progress they are making as they go along. Best of all, when you work together to design goals and have a way to measure them the employee is much more likely to accomplish them.
- Have consequences for not meeting expectations-While you want to assume that performance goals will be reached you should also have consequences for when expectations are not met. The employee should also have a say as to what those consequences will be so that they will feel a sense of ownership for reaching the goal. Keep in mind that accountability means that the consequences and expectations should be very clear to everyone involved.
- Review the progress toward goals-It will not be enough to simply set up goals for performance and then hope that they are met. Business managers who want to improve performance should meet with their employees on a regular basis to see what progress is being made. Regular performance reviews should be held to let employees know that they are accountable for what they are doing as this will also help to keep them on track and working toward achieving their performance goals.
- Provide motivation and incentives-In order to help your employees achieve their performance goals business managers will need to know how to motivate their employees. Providing incentives is a great way to do this as long as the incentive is something of value to their employees. Successful business managers also let their employees know that they want them to succeed and they will be a resource to help them do that.
- Set out a clear set of expectations-It is crucial that if you want performance to improve that you need to set out clear expectations for your employees. If you are not clear about what you need then your employees will only become frustrated trying to figure it out. This cannot only damage performance but employee morale, as well. When you let your employees know what you need from them you are far more likely to get it.
- Offer lots of praise-Finally, business managers should understand that they need to offer plenty of praise along with correction. Your employees will be much more motivated if you take the time to point out what they are doing right rather then just dwelling on what they need to correct.
