Training Employees Effectively

businessmanathome_9746645.jpg
Training employees is often looked as a simple guideline of training and once the training is completed the employee is left to see if they sink or swim. This unfortunately can lead to disaster with-in the company. Having poorly trained employees can lead to many accidents, mistakes, and sometimes company money loss. What some employees and employers don't always recognize is that there are different types of training and sometimes overlook how much training is needed.

First the company or manager needs to figure out what training is needed before beginning training. Start by getting to know what types of skills and training your employees have. Then the manager needs to have a skill level that should be reached after training has occurred. By setting the desire leveled of skill after training later becomes easier for the manager to follow up and see if the results are within the companies needs or if further training is needed.

The different types of training are:
- Training On the job
- Classroom training
- Apprentice training

On the job training is the most common in the job industry, and usually is all that is required for many different jobs. On the job training consists of another employee or manager is assigned to train the new employee or current employee the procedures and guidelines while actually performing the job duties.

Using classroom training is quite effective.Just as though students would attend a class, new employees or current employees attend a class showing them duties and procedures of a new job or new department. Often times classroom training is used for groups of employees instead of just on individual depending on the corporation. Classroom training can also be performed in a classroom at a technical college or university for on the job training as well, before actually entering the job itself.
Apprenticeship training is where an employee will shadow and learn from an expert in the field of the desired job position. This can range from a couple months to a year. Many larger positions use this technique as someone aspiring to enter the company at a higher level.

Now that the company has decided on the technique of training, you want to be sure that you have someone who is skilled is the field. You don't want someone who is still newly trained to come in and train new employees. You want someone who knows the circumstances of every situation that could possibly happen while performing job duties.

Lastly what many mangers and trainers often forget is to follow up after training. A lot of people will get excited about new programs and things for a few weeks and then they just fall back into their older habits again because they are comfortable. Have a system in place that helps to remind people to do the right way and to ensure that they are following the new procedures. Little reminders such as emails and monthly training seminars can help to keep people on the right track.

Involve the employees in the overall training process and to get them to work on helping you to create an effective one that they will actually do. This will get them excited and will make it easier to follow the new procedures.

As you can see training employees can be a very long process and should require quite a bit of involvement from management or Human resources, whom ever is responsible for the training. Training your employees the correct way can reassure that the follow up will be minimal and hopefully rewarding knowing that if there is any more training needed is should be minimal.
