Studies show that there are certain traits that successful business managers have in common. While it is not imperative that you have all of these traits to manage a business it will certainly make the job a lot easier. The bottom line is that the desire to manage a business and make it successful will only take you so far. You will need a certain skill set that you can fall back on in order to take your business where you want it to go. The good news is that it is never too late to acquire the skills that you need to make your business successful. Here is what you will need to make your business succeed-

- Work ethic-Business managers need to have a strong work ethic. If you are the business manager who comes in late and leaves early after taking a 2 hour lunch there is little chance that your business will succeed in the long term. Not only will your employees resent your "above the rules" attitude the management of your business will likely suffer as well. You need to show your employees that you are not asking them to work any harder then you are willing to. Once you employees and your customers see how hard you are willing to work they will be much more willing to invest in your business and make it a success.
- Belief in yourself-Successful business managers believe in themselves. You need to know that you can lead your business to success. You must be able to make multiple decisions under pressure and deal with the consequences of your decisions. If you are unsure as to how you can possibly manage your business or you feel that you need to constantly be leaning on someone else then the chances are high that your business will not have the success that it could have had. Worse yet, if you don't believe in yourself then the chances are low that your employees and customers will believe in you and your business.
- Knowledge of business finances-Studies show that the number one reason that businesses fail is due to poor financial management. This is true even for businesses that had a healthy rate of sales. While you don't need to know everything about business finances in order to help your business succeed you will need to have a working knowledge of business finances. Keep in mind that even if you have someone else deal with the day to day managing of your business finances you will ultimately be responsible for keeping your business financially healthy. Finally, it is important to understand that learning about business finances is an ongoing process. Successful business managers never stop trying to learn everything they can about managing the finances of their business.
- Work/life balance-It may seem that in order to be successful in business management that you need to be working 24/7. However, while this can seem like you are giving it your all the reality is that this is the fastest way to burnout. There are many business managers who have learned this the hard way. Successful business managers know the importance of balancing their work and personal life so that they can take time off and then return to their business full of energy and enthusiasm to continue doing what they love. Part of being able to achieve a successful work/life balance is training the right people to work for you so that you can delegate and leave your business in capable hands when you do take a break. When you can do this you are successfully managing your business.
