  • Surround yourself with the best people. To often insecure managers are afraid that their subordinates are going to show them up. To make sure this doesn't happen these managers get rid of all the productive people that could really help them shine. Savvy business managers know that they are only as good, as the people around them. Pick the best people right from the start, and your success will come
  • Motivate the people around you. If you can motivate your employees to perform for you, you will get much higher levels of productivity all throughout your business. The best managers are motivators. It is important to understand that employees perform well, for the prestige, the recognition and most importantly the pay. In order to successfully motivate your employees, you will need to understand what they want. Then you will need to determine what is the best way that you can give it to them, when they do what you want.
  • Don't just be a manager, be a leader! Even if you have the best employees that are highly motivated if you cannot provide them with leadership, then it really is all for nothing. You want to be able to provide your team with a goal, and then lead your team toward it. Successful business managers, set themselves apart, from others, by the fact that they just don't manage, they lead.
  • Always be improving your communication skills. The ability to communicate well with others, may just be the most important skill, any manager can have. If you cannot let others know what your vision is, or you can't motivate others, you can not effectively manage. Almost all tasks as a manager depend on the ability to communicate well. The good news is that if you find that you not a good communicator, there are ways that you can improve your skills.
  • Handle the business finances better. The bottom line in any business is all about the money. If your business is not making money, you won't be staying open very long. You must understand how the financial aspects of your business works, and what you have to do to manage them. Keep in mind that if you are weak in this area, there is lots of help that is available. Classes are often available through local colleges, and there is online help and tutorials that can help you improve your skills.
  • Be better at managing your time-The only thing that can be more difficult to manage then money, is time. You may feel with all of the day to day demands of running your business, that you never have enough time. The key to being a successful time manager is to make sure that you are effectively using your time, to accomplish the tasks that are the most beneficial to the business. The bottom line is that the better your time management skills become the better and more successful manger you can be.
  • Don't be afraid to take a break. To often business managers feel that everything will collapse without them. The result is they drive themselves to sheer exhaustion, and their management skills suffer. Whether you choose to take a few days off, or visit a tropical locale, for a couple of weeks, you will come back refreshed and ready, to take on the numerous and never ending, challenges of managing your business.
